On March 20, the director of the General Administration of Customs reported at a press conference of the State Council that, a total of 55,000 imported COVID cases were detected among inbound personnel to the Chinese mainland in 2022, accounting for 67% of the cumulative number of the imported COVID cases detected during the past three years, which was considered to be a big progress as China stepped into the victory of epidemic control.

The National Immigration Administration reports that, compared to 670 million in 2019, a total of 115.7 million and 128 million entry-exit personnel were inspected by the national immigration management departments in 2022 and 2021, respectively.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has removed the reporting data of prior close contacts, lifted the isolation measures, and stopped making a distinction between domestic patients and imported cases since China reduced the control on COVID-19 to Category B on January 8, 2023.

However, important populations, key locations, and modified virus strains are still being continually monitored in accordance with the national epidemic prevention policy.

According to the notification of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, from March 10 to March 16, 38 new cases with key mutated variants were detected, including 1 case of BQ.1.2, 2 cases of XBB.1.11.1, 13 cases of XBB.1.5, 2 cases of XBB.1.5.7, 16 cases of XBB.1.9.1, 3 cases of XBB.1.9.2, and 1 case of XBB.2.3.

Among them, XBB.1.11.1, XBB.1.9 and XBB.2.3 were discovered in the Chinese mainland for the first time.

The Effect of New Mutated Variants is Still Limited

From September 26, 2022 to March 16, 2023, a total of 33,486  effective genome sequences results of local cases were reported nationwide, all of which were Omicron variants, with 107 evolutionary branches, the main strains were BA.5.2.48 (taking 45.6%), BF.7.14 (23.8%), BA.5.2.49 (9.9%) and DY.1 (8.4%).
